Week 4: June 6 - June 12

Remember to reflect on your progress towards your initial goals, how those goals may have shifted/changed, and what impact this time has had on you overall. In the beginning my initial goal was to learn about new technology that is being developed for the future of medicine. However, in the end I realize I learned so much more than just that. I learned about people's stories and how their past has influenced how they grow as well as the power of connection.  Would you recommend this senior project to another student? Why or why not? Personally, I would not recommend this project to another senior. Although I enjoyed my time and it was an amazing opportunity, at the end I felt burnt out and tired. I realize that I should have taken this time to be more relaxed before going into college. Should the school incorporate some of these wider “passion project” proposals into more traditional Senior Projects? Why or why not? I think the school should allow people to explore whatever they...

Week Three: May 30th - June 5th

Vocab:  Leukocyte:  The se cells circulate in the blood and are part of the immune system's response to injuries, damaging substances in the body, etc. •      Tell a story about a happy/challenging/funny/meaningful moment from the week Last week I finished the first project that I was working on so I had the opportunity to work with Mateo on his project. There were moments that were particularly challenging, because of the new technology I had to work with. However, there was one specific moment where Mateo and I were trying to figure out the distance of a Leukocyte and it kept disappearing. This particular Leukocyte became the running joke of the day as we never actually did find out where it started. Although I believe Mateo is still trying to figure out where it started, it only took me 5 minutes to give up (this seemed to be a constant theme throughout the week).  •      What have you learned?  One of the things that Mateo and I obse...

Week Two: May 23 - May 29

Warning: This blog post may contain X-rays as well as bright images.  Tell a story about a happy/challenging/funny/meaningful moment from the week  This week has been filled with challenges, frustrating moments, and growth. However, I want to look back on one of the funniest experiences that have been happening during my senior project which is sneaking in the front door. The lab that I am working in requires a badge to get through both the building and lab door. Neither Mateo nor I have the badges required to get through these doors so we have to perfectly time our entrance with someone else. Over the course of these two weeks, we have pretended to lose our badges or drop something on the ground in order to make a discreet entrance when someone carrying a box of new Eppendorf tubes or nitrogen containers goes into the building. But it doesn't just end at the front door. We then usually have to anywhere from 5 - 30 minutes when a lab attendee is not working the space yet...

Week One: May 16 - 22

*WARNING: THIS BLOG POST CONTAINS BRIGHT IMAGES AND ANIMAL CT SCANS*  Vocabulary: Angiogenesis - The development of new blood vessels.  Arteriogenesis - A term that relates to the diameter of blood vessels.  Voxel - Think of this like a pixel but 3-D   Summary of my  Senior Project: Who, What, Where?      For my Senior Project, I am working in a translational research lab on the OHSU campus. Alongside Mateo Sufuentes, we will be working under Dr. Lindner and the fellows in his laboratory. I specifically am analyzing the CT scans of test subjects and looking at the intensity, binary, pixelation, and density of blood vessels (excluding major veins.) All of this data is determined by analyzing each voxel, which thankfully is not done by hand. So far I haven't been working with any other fellows in the lab and because of the pandemic, I have been working more at home.  Why did you choose this particular project? ...
