Week Three: May 30th - June 5th

Vocab:

Leukocyte: These cells circulate in the blood and are part of the immune system's response to injuries, damaging substances in the body, etc.

Tell a story about a happy/challenging/funny/meaningful moment from the week
Last week I finished the first project that I was working on so I had the opportunity to work with Mateo on his project. There were moments that were particularly challenging, because of the new technology I had to work with. However, there was one specific moment where Mateo and I were trying to figure out the distance of a Leukocyte and it kept disappearing. This particular Leukocyte became the running joke of the day as we never actually did find out where it started. Although I believe Mateo is still trying to figure out where it started, it only took me 5 minutes to give up (this seemed to be a constant theme throughout the week).

    What have you learned?
One of the things that Mateo and I observed was the different speeds of the Leukocytes. Although there are many reasons for the velocity changing we figured out a new one this week. Since there is a rush of red blood cells coming in from the capillaries, the Leukocytes move faster at these moments and then slow down.

Out of the past three weeks, this week was the most fun. Mainly I learned how to use a new computer
program, but I also got to experience learning new ways to solve different problems. Many times we lost
the locations of the Leukocytes and had to figure out a way to track both the starting and ending locations.
We quickly learned that writing the times down at the beginning and end of the start time made the process of tracking them much easier.

I also learned that sometimes you have to miss out to be responsible. During this week there was an experiment that I was interested in and wanted to attend. Unfortunately, I had to work that day and I was not able to attend it. Although I was sad both of my parents were proud that I stuck to my commitment instead of blowing it off.

•    Reflection on progress towards goals from week 1
This week I had to be as flexible as possible. It was not easy coming in halfway through Mateos project. I
often felt that I was missing something or was a couple step behind. However, as the week continued I
became more confident and felt like we were both on the same track.

•    Questions you have
I should take this up with my mentor but I am wondering why the Leukocytes get stuck to the sides of the

blood vessels?

We got stuck in an elevator!

  1. Loved this post! Really neat to hear about working through trial and error and definitely give you a lot of credit for balancing work + senior projects. Not easy! What was the new technology you were referring to? What made learning it challenging? Here's to not getting stuck in an elevator next week!
